It is not only the human race which is facing an identity crisis; it is a new and growing problem with the dogs too! More because more people by the day are keeping pets, they need to have an identification system in place that will help them to identify their pet(s). Not only is the identification by the owner important but owner-identification is important too.

The bad news is that dogs, unlike humans do not understand the need for not venturing outside without a guide. And due to their irrational behavior, they often get lost. This is where the microchip steps in. When someone finds the lost dog, the person immediately can take the dog to a registered vet who can then use the information embedded in the microchip and then identify its owner. The owner can then be duly informed about its lost dog and hand him over.

The design and concept is purely ingenious and has helped a lot of dog owners to reunite with their pets! But if you ask us, the microchip could have been a little more useful. For example, a tracking device could be fitted to the chip so that the owner himself could track the pet down instead of waiting for a noble person to help him find his dog. Dog micro-chipping has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, but it is time that more chips had a tracking device in them.

Microchip vs. GPS Collar

As already mentioned in the article, a GPS collar is an effective tool to help you trace and find your dog. But it has a limitation that the owner's info is not stored with the GPS device. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which allows you to trace and track your dog with accuracy of a few feet. The GPS satellites in the sky help you find out the same with the assistance of the internet.

The microchip is just a chip that stores information about the dog and its present owner. In some cases, it also holds a disease history record of the dog and name of the insurance cover provider. It is purely on the discretion of the person who found the dog, whether to take him to a vet or take it with him! There's no doubt that once taken to a vet, he has to inform its owners - but then, it all depends on the person's nature.

We wish there was more innovation and there would be an amalgamation of both of the features of GPS collar and a microchip. Thus, tracking would have been possible both ways and resulted in a faster search. There are some collars that offer both but have a higher price tag. Browse the internet to find the best of both in a single device!
